Most sticking doors do not need planing at all. Nine times out of ten the top hinge has worked loose and the door has dropped onto the frame. We start with the hinges, packing out stripped screw holes with timber so the screws bite again, and only reach for the plane if the door still drags.
Latches and handles
A door that will not stay shut usually has a keep that no longer lines up with the latch. Moving the keep by two millimetres is a ten-minute job. New handles and internal locks are fitted to the existing holes where we can, so there are no fresh scars on the door.
Timber windows
Older Worcester houses often have timber casement and sash windows that have been painted shut. We cut the paint line, free the window, ease it and wax the runners so it opens again. Broken sash cords and full overhauls go to a specialist and we will tell you who.
Included
- Tightening or replacing worn hinges and packing out loose screw holes
- Planing a sticking door edge and sealing the bare timber again
- Adjusting the latch keep so the door closes with one push
- Freeing painted-shut timber casements and sashes
Not something we do
- Front-door locks and security upgrades (we recommend a locksmith)
- Replacing double-glazed units or failed window seals
Job HP-4298, Battenhall: full-day rate, £340
“The back bedroom door has stuck since we moved in. It was the top hinge, not the door. Twenty minutes, and it closes with one finger.”
Questions about doors and windows
- Why does my door stick in winter and not in summer?
- Timber takes on moisture and swells. If it only sticks for a few months, a light plane on the edge and a coat of paint to seal it is usually enough. We take off as little as we can.
- Can you fit a lock on a bathroom door?
- Yes, a bathroom thumb-turn lock with an emergency release on the outside. About 45 minutes on a standard internal door.
